Sunny is an 8-year-old Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix weighing approximately 65 pounds, and she is looking for a very special kind of home.
After spending 557 days in a shelter as part of a welfare case, Sunny has come a long way. She is a gentle, quiet, incredibly independent girl who has learned that the world can be a safe place but she does not need or particularly want a lot of interaction with people.
Sunny is not your typical affectionate, attention-seeking dog. She is more of a “let me be near you, but please let me do my own thing” kind of girl. She may never become the dog who jumps into your lap, asks for endless pets, or follows you around the house looking for attention and that's okay. Sunny's love language is simply feeling safe.
She has her favorite safe places throughout the house where she can relax and observe the world around her. When she's comfortable, she is perfectly content to settle into her own space and enjoy the peace and security of a home. She is quiet, rarely barks, and doesn't need constant entertainment or attention.
Sunny can be fearful when she feels overwhelmed or scared. If frightened, her instinct is to get away rather than engage, so her adopters will need to be extremely patient and understanding. She should always be handled thoughtfully and given the ability to retreat to her safe spaces. A secure home and careful management around doors and gates will be very important because Sunny may bolt if she becomes frightened.
The good news? Sunny does enjoy going for walks and has made wonderful progress becoming more comfortable exploring the world. She also does well around other dogs and has even initiated brief moments of play with a canine friend.
Sunny is looking for an adopter who understands that trust cannot be rushed and affection cannot be forced. Her ideal home is calm, predictable, and patient, with someone who will celebrate the small victories rather than expecting her to become a completely different dog.
She doesn't need someone to “fix” her.
She needs someone who can say, “You don't have to be anything other than Sunny.”
