Meet Poppy!
Some dogs just need another dog to show them the way, and that's exactly who Poppy is.
This sweet young girl was found wandering as a stray in a known dumping area, but thanks to a Good Samaritan, she made her way to Worthy Dog Rescue and has discovered what it means to be safe, loved, and part of a family.
Poppy has blossomed in her foster home, where she's living with another dog, Maggie, and several cats. While she was initially shy and reserved, with the help of her canine companion, she’s gaining confidence every day. Maggie has shown her the ropes, and Poppy now follows her everywhere, squeezes onto the couch or dog bed just to be close to her, and clearly takes comfort in having another dog by her side. Because of this, we feel Poppy will do best in a home with another confident, friendly dog to help her continue building confidence.
Poppy is housetrained, crate trained, and settles well in her crate when her family is away. Like many rescue dogs adjusting to home life, she experienced some separation anxiety during her transition, so her crate has been an important tool in helping her feel safe and secure. Having another dog has also made a big difference, and we believe she'll do best with adopters who have a flexible schedule and can continue building her confidence as she settles into her new home.
She's been great at navigating a busy household, including frequent visits from nurses, physical therapists, and even a steady stream of contractors during a home renovation. She's accepting of visitors, curious about children without being overly excitable, and isn't a jumper.
Once she feels comfortable, Poppy has become more affectionate. She loves curling up on the couch for snuggles, sleeps in bed with her foster family, and is happiest when she's close to her favorite people. Her foster mom says one of her favorite things is watching Poppy gently rest her head on her husband’s knee while relaxing together.
Outdoors is where Poppy's playful side really shines. She’s an active dog who loves walks and exploring new places, happily weaving through the brush, investigating every interesting scent, and chasing squirrels up trees. At home, she'll proudly bring you a tennis ball over and over again for an endless game of fetch, and she enjoys chewing on bones and sturdy toys. She’s been living in a more rural setting and would love an active family that enjoys spending time outside and will include her on walks, hikes, and adventures.
Poppy is still gaining confidence in new situations, so she'll need a patient family willing to give her some time to settle in. The reward is a sweet, loyal companion who forms deep bonds and wants nothing more than to be close to the people and the dog companion she loves.
If you're looking for a gentle, affectionate dog who will thrive with a canine companion and blossom with love, patience, and adventure, Poppy may be the perfect addition to your family.
