Meet Rusty, a handsome 4-year-old border collie mix. Rusty's world changed suddenly when his owner passed away, and he spent some time in boarding before coming to our rescue not long ago. Given those changes, it's no surprise that he's taking some time to settle into another new environment. But we're already seeing glimpses of the sweet, devoted dog underneath that initial reserve.
Rusty doesn't automatically assume every stranger is his new best friend. He's thoughtful and observant, taking time to size up new people, dogs, and situations before deciding they're worthy of his trust. With each passing day, though, we see him relaxing a little more and letting his guard down.
What Rusty does seem to know is that he wants to be close to his person. When I go outside with him, he often comes over, puts his head in my lap, and presses close for some affection. After a few minutes of petting, he'll wander off to sniff around or take care of business, but it isn't long before he comes back to check in with me again. That quiet need for connection is one of the things we find most endearing about him. He may be cautious with the world, but once he decides you're his person, he really wants to stay connected to you.
Rusty is calm in the house and reliably house trained. So far, he's been happiest indoors, where he seems to feel most secure. He hasn't shown much interest in toys yet, but treats are another story. If there's a snack involved, you definitely have his attention, making positive reinforcement a great way to build his confidence and work on training.
We've also caught a few glimpses of Rusty's playful side with another dog, and we believe that as he becomes more comfortable, more of that personality will emerge. He simply needs the time and security to show us who he really is.
In sum, Rusty isn't a dog who will rush up to everyone he meets with an enthusiastic greeting. He's looking for someone who understands that trust takes time and is willing to let a relationship develop at his pace. In return, you may find yourself with something truly special: a devoted companion who chooses you, wants to be near you, and quietly checks in just to make sure you're still there.
