Denzel was purchased by a senior and surrendered when it became apparent that he was a high-energy puppy and she was unable to meet his needs.
At 10 months old, Denzel is still very much a puppy. He is playful, energetic, curious, and still learning proper social behavior and how to navigate new situations.
Until recently, Denzel had been very social at adoption events and had allowed potential adopters and visitors to approach, interact with, and handle him with ease.
During a recent meet-and-greet, however, Denzel became very uncomfortable with the potential adopter and displayed growling and biting behavior that appeared to be intended to make the person back away and give him space. This is not behavior we had previously seen from him.
Because of what we observed, we believe Denzel’s best placement will probably be in a quieter, lower-traffic home where there are not constant new visitors.
This type of defensive behavior could potentially carry over into his future home, so his adopter should understand that Denzel may react similarly toward visitors or guests if he feels uncomfortable or threatened.
Because Denzel is still a young puppy and is learning how to handle new situations appropriately, we believe he would be best suited for an adult or a home with older, respectful children who understand dog body language and know when to give a dog space.
A home with very young children who may not yet understand a dog’s warning signals or boundaries would not be the best placement for him at this time.
Denzel is still available for adoption, and we will continue appropriate meet-and-greets with applicants who appear to be a good fit for his needs.
His ideal adopter will be patient, willing to read his body language, respect his boundaries, provide structure and consistency, and continue helping him mature into a confident adult dog.
A securely fenced yard is required.
Denzel may do well with another similar-sized dog with appropriate introductions.
No large dogs.
Denzel is still a young dog with a lot of potential. Our goal is to find the home that fits who he is and gives him the best chance to thrive for the rest of his life.
