Meet River, a handsome boy with a joyful spirit and a heart as big as he is and plenty of affection to share. River truly comes alive when he is playing with other dogs, whether that play involves joining a game of chase or happily wrestling and rolling around on the ground - time with his canine friends brings him so much joy. River has also discovered the fun of toys and will toss a rope toy or investigate the newest chew bone. While he prefers to enjoy meals in a quiet spot of his own, he is wonderfully generous at playtime and happily shares his toys with his friends.
As much as River loves to play, his sweetest quality may be how deeply he enjoys being close to his people. He will follow you from room to room, lean in for affection, and keep a curious eye on whatever you are doing. He loves walks, car rides, and exploring new places - open the car door and he is ready to share the next adventure with you. He also enjoys being brushed and has been cooperative for nail trims and ear cleanings. We do not know River’s past so while he may not have ever lived indoors, he is showing he quite enjoys the comforts of home. He keeps his area clean, is comfortable in a crate, and settles quietly. He is also making progress with leash manners and responds well to gentle reminders. River is currently working toward a healthy weight and can be a little selective about meals, so he will appreciate a family willing to help him discover his favorites.
River could thrive with a canine companion or as an only dog with regular opportunities to play with friends. He greeted cats with gentle curiosity and quickly lost interest, so he could likely share a home with one. Because this lovable boy is large and does not always realize his size, a home with older children would be the best fit. Like typical Great Pyrenees, he has a guardian bark and will make sure his family knows when something new approaches. River’s ideal adopter has big-dog experience, a 5-foot secure yard, and a patient heart to continue guiding him as he settles into family life. In return, River will offer loyal companionship, cheerful tail wags, playful moments, and the comfort of a devoted friend who simply wants to be near you. Could River be your loving shadow and adventure buddy?

NYS Registered Non-Profit Rescue # RR102. National Great Pyrenees Rescue (NGPR) has been rescuing and adopting out Great Pyrenees since 2006. Our relationship doesn’t end with adoption, as we continue to support adopters throughout the lifetime of their dog.
Our goal is to assess every application on its own merits. Key considerations are: 1) the experience of the applicant with large breed dogs 2) children in the household or regularly visiting the household are ready for a large-breed dog who is a guardian by nature and 3) the sex of other dogs currently residing in the household to avoid same-sex aggression issues. For puppies under six months old, the applicant’s ability to socialize the puppy with older dogs is a priority.
We have many Pyrs and Pyr mixes who need homes. You can see more of these beautiful dogs by clicking on Adoptable Dogs.
