An 8-month-old neutered male Lab mix can be a wonderful companion for an experienced adopter who is ready to give him patience, structure, and time to build confidence. He is currently fearful and anxious in our shelter environment and does not yet reliably respond to verbal cues, although he takes treats gently. He is looking for a calm, quiet, adult-only home with an experienced dog owner who has knowledge of his breed mix and can also provide an active, structured lifestyle. Due to his fearful and anxious nature, there are concerns around placement with children. Any introductions to other dogs should take place in a controlled setting with careful monitoring. His ideal adopter will be able to provide daily leash walks and a securely fenced backyard. Off-leash parks are not appropriate at this time, as he still needs to develop a reliable recall and would benefit from multiple one-on-one interactions and opportunities to establish a strong bond with his new family. His adopter must also be willing to implement a preventative food program in the home using strategies such as interactive bowls and toys, hand feeding, and trade-ups. To help him develop confidence, communication, and everyday skills, completion of a basic manners class and/or private behaviour training is required. With consistency, patience, positive reinforcement, and a predictable routine, his new family can provide him with the supportive environment he needs as he continues to learn and settle into his new home.Size: Medium 24.7kg/54lbsChildren: Adult only home pleaseCats: Recommend a slow introduction to cats and other petsDogs: May do best with dogs of similar size and playstyle
