Domestic Short Hair
Scuttle is a two year old neutered male cat, looking for his home. Here’s what his foster volunteer says about him:
How would you describe the cat's general personality?
Scuttle is an affectionate, playful, and energetic little guy! He loves following his human around and will sometimes lie right on your feet, making it impossible to walk. He’s also quite vocal and loves to meow at you. He’s curious about everything and wants to play with just about anything he comes across.
Does the cat enjoy being pet? If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched?
Scuttle absolutely loves being petted, especially on the back of his head and under his chin. He may try to grab your hand with his paws when you touch his belly, so he seems to prefer head and chin pets over belly rubs!
Does the cat come on your lap?
Yes! Scuttle loves lying on your lap. When relaxing on the couch, he also likes to snuggle up right against your body. He’s a very affectionate and cuddly companion.
Does the cat like to be held?
Scuttle doesn’t seem very used to being held yet. He stays calm when picked up, but usually jumps down after a second or two.
Does the cat sleep in your bed?
Not sure yet! We haven’t reached the stage of sharing a bed, so I don’t know if he’ll sleep with me at night.
Does the cat seek your attention?
Yes! Scuttle is very vocal and will keep meowing until I make eye contact with him or respond to him. He definitely likes to communicate with his humans!
Does the cat like to play?
Scuttle absolutely loves to play, and solo toys are his specialty! He plays with them very well and loves to run around. He’s still learning how to play with wand toys and often tries to take the wand away so he can play with it by himself. He’s also still figuring out puzzle toys and sometimes has trouble finding the hidden treats.
What are the cat's favorite games and toys?
Scuttle’s favorite toy is his catnip pillow! He also likes to hide his favorite toys and take them out again whenever he feels like playing.
How vocal is the cat? What kinds of sounds does the cat make?
Scuttle is quite vocal! When he’s awake and not resting, he’ll often meow here and there, especially when people are walking around. He also loves meowing in the kitchen, possibly because he associates it with mealtime.
Scuttle makes all kinds of sounds! He meows, purrs, and makes little chirping or trilling sounds.
Does the cat scratch a scratcher? If no, please explain.
Scuttle mostly uses his scratching posts and scratchers. He tried scratching a cabinet door once, but stopped when he realized he didn’t like the texture. So far, he seems to prefer his designated scratching spots!
Does the cat always use the litter box? If no, please explain.
Scuttle uses his litter box very well now and does a great job covering his waste. When he first arrived at his foster home, he pooped on a bath mat and urinated on the sofa. This may have been related to the stress of adjusting to a new environment. Since settling in and getting more comfortable, he has been using his litter box well.
What food and frequency is the cat currently eating?
Scuttle eats four meals of wet food a day, about half a can per meal. His wet food includes Fussie Cat chicken and turkey shreds, RAWZ chicken and turkey shreds, and Tiki Cat chicken mousse. He also has a separate bowl of RAWZ chicken recipe dry food, with about 1–2 tablespoons available to help make sure he gets enough to eat.
Is the cat picky about food?
Scuttle is not picky at all! He happily eats all the food offered to him and always finishes his meals.
What is the cat's favorite treat?
I’ve tried Greenies, Temptations Party Mix, and Churu treats, and Scuttle likes all of them!
What medication is the cat on, and how is it administered?
No.
Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances?
When Scuttle gets overly excited during play, he may reach out and try to grab people with his paws and claws. However, he has not actually hurt anyone.
Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you?
Scuttle has not scratched or injured me. When he gets excited and reaches out with his paws, he seems to be mindful of his strength and keeps his claws fairly gentle.
Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you? Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)?
Yes. When Scuttle gets excited, he may repeatedly try to gently nip at people. His bites have never broken the skin and usually don’t hurt.
To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful?
Scuttle tends to hide for a few hours when meeting strangers. Once he feels safe, he may come out to observe them from a distance or from a cozy hiding spot. He needs some time to warm up to new people.
If you have observed the cat with other animals, please describe how they get on?
I haven’t had a chance to observe Scuttle interacting with other animals, as there are no other animals in his current foster home.
Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions?
Scuttle is full of funny little quirks! He responds right away whenever you call him. When he sleeps, he can twist himself into all kinds of hilarious positions, almost like a liquid cat. He also seems to be able to fall asleep and wake up at a moment’s notice. He’s endlessly entertaining to watch.
In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt?
Scuttle is very affectionate and loves being around his humans. He follows me everywhere, meows for attention, and loves to cuddle. He’s also full of energy and has lots of funny sleeping positions. Even when he gets excited during playtime, he tries to be gentle with people. He’s a fun, sweet little guy who makes you feel loved!
What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them?
Scuttle can be shy and scared at first, but he is not aggressive. He just needs time to feel safe. Give him several hiding spots. A separate room is ideal, but a quiet corner can work too. I gave him half of my living room since I don’t have a separate room. I set up a small camper for him to hide in. He also liked hiding behind my partner’s desk.
Give him space and privacy. Sometimes I went into my bedroom so he could explore, eat, drink, and use the litter box without feeling watched. Keep his food near his hiding spots at first, and put his litter box somewhere quiet and easy to reach. Don’t force him to interact. Let him come to you when he’s ready. When he starts watching you from a distance, try tossing him some treats. Scuttle kept eating and using his litter box normally while adjusting to his new home. It took about a week for him to start approaching me on his own.
