[BLUE]Background: Brought in stray by finder on 9/1/26. Finder noted that dog was scared. Dog was scared to get in the car but calm/relaxed while riding in the car. Given Blue dot on intake. dog was growling when staff approached kennel, wide eye, hackles raised, barking and retreating. Dog was given trazadone and gabapentin for shelter-related fear, anxiety, and stress prior to handling for intake procedures. Dog was timid and retreated initially, but tolerated all handling for intake procedures, including vaccines. Summary of handling notes from two consecutive days on handling and volunteer handling notes to date. O: Dog initially retreating and barking in kennel bx00#19; raised snout, small mouth, no teeth. Comes to the front when spoken to and with door partially open. Circles and paces in the kennel while barking. Easy to leash while pacing in kennel. Walks just ahead or alongside handler on leash with neutral posture, forward pricked ears. Urinates and defecates in the yard. Somewhat stiff with handling for collaring. One head whip with no handler contact on initial attempt to collar, softened with some pets around the head and neck and was relaxed with second attempt to collar less than one minute later. Dropped leash in the yard. Dog follows and pounces on tossed toys and balls. Orients to handler. Responds to verbal cue and hand signal for sit. Takes treats with a soft mouth. Leans into pets around head, neck, chest, back, legs with relaxed musculature. Entered kennel ahead of handler. Tolerant of handling around neck and head while removing slip leash by hand. Volunteer notes to date are consistent with staff notes. Additional notes that dog can be very playful and offers play bows to handler, may make moderate body contact during handler directed play.A: Sensitive young dog appears to be uncomfortable in new environments and meeting unfamiliar people. Once comfortable, is affiliative and very playful. Has some existing training (knows sit, walks well on leash). Medium energy. Shows enjoyment with pets. Possibly house trained (eliminates immediately in the yard). Treat motivated. Playful with toys as well as with handler directed play. Blue for volunteer handling: dog can be difficult to leash d/t barking and retreating on initial meeting in the kennel and head whip/discomfort with initial handling. Consider for Yellow if recommended by Crew volunteers. P: Make available for adoption by appointment. Recommend adopters continue to work on basic manners (leash skills, recall, sit) using a patient, reward-based training approach. Recommend slow and structured introduction to strangers and new environments, do not expect dog to immediately accept new people. Unknown how this dog may do with children. The following observed behavior may make a home with young children less suitable: can be sensitive to unexpected touch as exhibited with head whip on initial collaring; once comfortable, dog can be very playful and makes moderate body contact while playing which may be too much for smaller children.[2026-09-06 12:04:00.000]
